What's Happening at the RMTAO

Changes to Mask Mandates

As of June 11, 2022, most Ontario mask mandates will expire. Masks will still be required in long-term care and retirement homes and is recommended in higher-risk congregate living settings, such as shelters and group homes.

The Chief Medical Officer also announced that on June 11, the remaining directives will be revoked and replaced with Ministry of Health guidance for health care workers and organizations.

Updates on that guidance will be posted on the CMTO COVID-19 page when it becomes available.

Organizations can also make their own masking policies, and many such as hospitals have already done so.

Many RMTs and patients will continue to choose to continue to wear masks after the mandate is lifted. RMTs can continue to ask that patients wear a mask in their practice and a patient may also ask an RMT to wear a mask for the duration of their treatment.

The RMTAO has created a document that intends to help RMTs work through some of the situations that may arise as mask mandates are lifted.

Regardless of your decision on masking, you should ensure your policy is clear and communicate it as soon as possible so patients know what to expect. You should also keep patient-centred care in mind and attempt to help your patients feel as comfortable and safe as possible.

Member Survey Results

The RMTAO conducted a survey of the membership to canvass their views and interests in the different activities of the RMTAO and to determine their areas of priority. The survey was open from March 15, 2021 to April 1, 2022 to all Active and Life Members.

Most respondents were satisfied or extremely satisfied with their RMTAO membership and the webinars and resources offered. One of the most highly rated aspects of membership was the opportunity to support advocacy on behalf of the massage therapy profession and the support provided by RMTAO by phone or email.

Business Tip of the Week

Refine Your Listening Skills

Becoming a better listener takes time and practice. Here are a few things you can do to improve this critical communication skill.
  • Establish why you’re listening. When entering a conversation, briefly reflect on the goals of the conversation and how you can best listen in that moment. For example, is your conversation partner seeking an honest critique, an analytical reflection, or an emotional connection? Then stay focused on that objective.
  • Don’t make the conversation about you. While interjecting your own personal story can be an act of empathy and relationship-building, it can also derail the focus of the conversation. It’s ok to insert personal comments as long as you redirect the conversation back to the other person.
  • Always ask for more context if you need it. Sometimes, just pausing and asking a probing follow-up question is the most powerful way to glean more information — and to show your conversation partner that you’re really present.

Research Article of the Week

The Prevalence of Work-Related Musculoskeletal Disease Among Pediatric Ophthalmologists

Introduction: Work-related musculoskeletal disease (MSD) is the second leading cause of disability globally. Ophthalmologists widely report MSDs in the neck (70%) and back pain (40-80%). Our study intended to identify the prevalence of MSDs among pediatric ophthalmologists.

Methods: Pediatric ophthalmologists self-reported chronic pain, instrumentation used, years practiced, surgeries performed, work schedule/environment modifications due to MSD, and treatment for MSD via an anonymous online survey. Statistical analysis of responses included odds ratios, Pearson chi-square testing, and Spearman correlations.

Results: This study had 101 respondents, with 66% reporting chronic pain. Chronic neck pain (41%) and lower back pain (31%) followed by shoulder pain (30%) were the leading MSD complaints and significantly correlated with years of experience (p<0.05). Participants often had multiple types of pain, including 13% of the sample who experienced all three types of pain. Those reporting shoulder and back pain also reported a greater incidence in work modification (68-83%). Those suffering from chronic neck, shoulder, and lower back pain have sought treatment for their MSD (p<0.05).

Discussion: With such wide reporting of chronic neck, back, and shoulder pain, the development of MSDs likely leads to disability. Ergonomic innovations in the workplace may reduce the healthcare burden and prolong pediatric ophthalmologists' ability to provide services.

Conclusion: In our study, the reported prevalence of chronic neck and back pain was comparable to previous studies and published literature, with 2/3 of participants reporting pain. There is a tremendous need for ongoing innovations, especially surgical loupes, operating microscopes, and slit-lamp modifications to prevent musculoskeletal disease.
